SUMMARY:Why the West Went to War in 1812
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging presentation led by Brandon C. Downing\, Professor of History at Marietta College. Downing will explore the connection between the old western territories and states like Ohio and the War of 1812. \nHis presentation will focus on the culture and experiences of settlers living beyond the Appalachian Mountains. \nBy examining backcountry life and early petitions from Kentucky’s formative years\, Downing will highlight how settlers understood land ownership\, governance and their place in the developing Northwest Territory. \nThe discussion will also address how ongoing violent encounters in the Ohio Valley shaped attitudes toward Great Britain and Native nations\, ultimately contributing to strong support for war among western communities. \nThis event is part of our America 250 lecture series highlighting various aspects of American\, Ohio and local history all year long.
