1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Did you know…
Children begin developing reading skills at birth? Promote those skills every day with the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program!

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

Sharing just one book a night gives your child the building blocks for lifelong success. Start whenever you like and begin reading, with the goal of reading 1,000 books before your child starts kindergarten. You’ll even receive rewards along the way to encourage your little one to keep reading!

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is available to all families with children between birth and six years. Visit the library or register with the Beanstack App to get started today!

How does it work?

  • Register now on Beanstack or visit your local branch.
  • Log each book that you and your child read together. Track your progress on Beanstack or with tracking sheets. (Even if your child wants to hear the same book again and again, you can count it each time. You can also count the books your child hears in storytime, daycare or preschool; even audiobooks count!)
  • Pick a FREE Book at 100 & 500 Book Milestones! Stop by your local branch to pick out your new book.
